A civils orientated fast track project carried out just below the Network Rail platforms at Waterloo, and just above the London Underground lines. YJLi and Network Rail worked in partnership to deliver a key franchise commitment.
YJLi were challenged to deliver this scheme in a three month window against an emerging scope to meet Network Rail's deadline of having ticket gates in operation within the Peak Hour Subway by the end of 2008.
The space constraints in the vaults between the main line station and the LUL tunnels beneath meant that the work required substantial new openings to be formed. Passenger routes could then be altered and the space needed for the gates created.
Due to the proximity of the main line tracks directly over the working area, the temporary works had to be designed not to the structural codes, but to the bridge code, requiring substantial additional propping and severely impacting the working area.
Further complication was created by the need to maintain passenger routes from the main line platforms to the LUL platforms during the rush hour.
The scope of works included alterations and renewals to mechanical, electrical, comms and fire systems
Working on a 24/7 basis, and with a real willingness from the client team and our supply chain, YJLi were able to facilitate the operation of the gates in time for the deadline.
Work then continued into 2009 to complete finishes and additional work.
The project was submitted for Network Rail's partnership award 2009
A short video showing the implementation of the scheme is available on request.
