YJLi is committed to making continuous improvements in our Health and Safety standards by acting now to reduce the risks that may lead to accidents and ill health in the future.
Health and Safety is the primary responsibility of every job role within the company with competent in-house Health and Safety advisors working closely with our delivery teams to report findings through to YJLi’s management board.
All YJLi Site Staff comply with the Health and Safety requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and are holders of the CSCS ID card. YJLi are currently moving towards a fully CSCS certified workforce which include all Agency staff and Subcontractors that are employed.
All staff are provided with effective training in order to have a good understanding of the Safety and Health impacts of our business and what they are expected to do to carry out their Safety and Health responsibilities. As a result YJLi has an extremely good Safety record, which has been achieved by constant attention to safety matters at every level throughout the business. YJLi's safety record is recognised as being one of the best within the industry.
In January 2008, YJLi achieved certification with BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety.
The Health and Safety Management System
It is our company's philosophy that everyone takes an active involvement in safety. We have an internal campaign called SINA (Safety Is No Accident).
SINA is our behavioural safety campaign and covers everything from employee surveys about safety through to safety posters.
We have recently developed the SEEIT (See It - Report It) System whereby we encourage employees to report anything they consider to be a hazard to safety. This is to help attitudes and influence behaviour by encouraging unsafe acts and near misses to be reported in order for action to be taken.
We ensure that our Site Managers carry out visual inspections daily which is reinforced by the requirement to submit a weekly self auditing check list. Project Managers are required to carry out monthly SHE inspections and Safety Engineers and Managers also carry out at a minimum one inspection per site per period. Our Senior Managers and Directors carry out safety tours every three months and findings and figures for all the above audits are reported to the Board of Directors.
YJLi Initiatives
YJLi initiated a mandatory glove and goggle policy across the company which was subsequently adopted as a standard across the LUL Network. The requirement for all staff and operatives on all projects to wear hand and eye protection at all times has resulted in a dramatic decrease in hand and eye injuries.
We introduced a restriction on the use of step ladders as working platforms . This has seen falls from height involving ladders reduced to zero.
Througout each year we actively promote safety awareness on all our sites by the Silver Rail Safety Award. This is presented to the site which has been adjudged the most active in promoting and achieving a strong safety culture..
